Capturing Birds in Flight

A shot of a bird in flight has always been a challenge to photographers. Seeing a perfect print image only serves to make them eager to create the same result. Photographing a bird in flight presents one problem, but capturing that one special bird-in-flight shot that's in focus and has good composition plus good light can represent a whole set of problems. Everyone has his share of good flight shots where the bird may be just a tiny bit soft. Those are easy. But, how do you get a great flight shot?

The camera technology of the last several years has made flight photography easier than it was before, but there are still lots of variables that need to be added to the equation to make good bird-in-flight photography a common part of your repertoire. Here are some fundamentals to help you increase your supply of flight shots:

Camera Body Features

The camera body equipment out today has made action photography much easier than it was when manual focus was the rule rather than the exception. The first handy feature to set is the continuous focus mode called AI Servo on Canon and Continuous Servo on Nikon. This setting allows the lens to keep changing the focus as long as the shutter button is depressed halfway and the subject is in the set auto focus point.

Second, Canon has a custom function that expands the auto focus point activation area to either 7 or 13 points. This is a great function, as it allows for the subject movement to remain in focus even if you don't keep up with the movement of the bird in your primary AF point.

Drive mode is the third camera function to set. Here, the best setting is "high-speed continuous" where you get the most frames per second that your camera body will allow. While you'll burn quite a few shots with this setting, it will allow more shots to choose from for the wing position and lighting you like best.

Lens Selection

Lens selection is a very subjective topic with plenty of correct answers. Being a Canon shooter, I'll refer to Canon lenses, but many other brands have some comparable lenses. If you want to do flight photography handholding your camera and lens, the best choices are the 400 f/5.6 and the 100-400 IS. These are, by far, the best lenses on the market for flight photography. (Canon shooters have the advantage here, as the comparable Nikon lens, the 80-400 VR, is very slow to focus. People in my workshops have wanted to throw their Nikon lenses as far as they could when they couldn't force them to focus fast enough.)

When handholding, try to keep your hand as far out on the barrel of the lens as possible to provide better balance while you're panning and moving around with the subject. Also, tuck your elbows into your body as far as you can and keep your legs about shoulder-width apart. This position helps you turn your body into a tripod.

Your skill level also plays a part in proper lens selection. When you're starting out in bird photography, it's best to use the above lenses as opposed to "big guns" such as the 400 f/2.8, 500 and 600mm lenses. The reason is that shorter focal length lenses will provide easier tracking of the birds in the viewfinder. With the larger lenses, you have a very limited viewing range when the birds are close. You have to get them in view when they're farther away and stay with them until they move close enough for you to take your shot. After time and practice, you'll find it easier to focus on them when they're close, but even then you'll miss some shots. Longer focal lengths also allow you to work at greater distances with less change in subject position. Birds going across the frame are easier to track, particularly with a long focal length, than those coming directly into the camera, since they stay at roughly the same distance.

If you plan to shoot from a tripod instead of wanting to hand hold the camera/lens combination, a big lens will definitely do the trick. If you're setting up a big lens on a tripod, by far the best option for a tripod head is the Wimberley head. The gimbal action is designed for action photography and makes panning with the birds easier than you could imagine if you've never used one of these heads. You can use a sturdy ball head, but you have to be careful with how loose you keep it. I primarily use my 400 f/2.8, sometimes with an extender, with the Wimberley head and then keep a second body close at hand with a 70-200 f/2.8 lens and either a 1.4 or 2X extender attached.

The faster the f-stop of the lens, the better, as quick shutter speeds are imperative in getting sharp flight shots. It's best to be able to stick with a f/2.8 lens but this isn't always an option, depending on how much money you can spend. F/4 and f/5.6 are about as slow as you want for getting quick action shots, whether the subject is birds-in-flight or any other fast-moving subject.

Advancing lens technology has made flight photography much easier, but not foolproof. Auto focus is the major development that has helped to capture action. Be aware that owning an AF lens is not a guarantee of sharp results. There is no substitute for good technique. However, auto focus does yield a higher percentage of acceptable images when you're shooting birds in flight, especially if you have a camera body that can shoot upwards of eight frames a second or more.

ISO

Because digital cameras keep improving the quality of images you get at higher ISO settings, it's now alright to push the setting to 200 or even 400 to get good flight shots, depending on the available light. The caution to keep in mind is that a shutter speed of at least 1/500 is needed--preferably even 1/1000 or more, if possible. Doing a little bit of testing with shutter speed and f-stop will help you determine what the ISO needs to be for you to obtain the desired shutter speed.

Lighting

As with any other subject, lighting is critical with flight photography. The best light condition for flight photography is front lighting, with the sun at your back and the birds coming towards you or across in front. The best light is still those two golden times of day when the sun is low on the horizon, but because the subject is high in the sky, you can extend your shooting time as the higher sun can still bounce nice light off the bird.

Composition

A key detail to keep in mind when you're composing flight shots is which auto focus point is set. You need to become adept at changing the auto focus point on the fly for you to get good flight shots. As multiple birds are flying around your location, you have to be aware of which point you've selected for the best composition.

The best compositions have space in front of the bird in the direction the bird is flying. Having its beak/ bill crowded against the leading edge of the shot makes for a potential throwaway image, even if everything else is right with the shot. Your subject needs room to breathe, and continually changing the AF point for better composition will provide the space you need to maintain in front of the bird.

Starting out, keep the AF point on the center point and try to get the bird's eye focused there. This will ensure there is room in front of the bird for it to fly into the frame. While the eye will be in the middle of the frame, the majority of the bird will be behind it, so you'll be keeping the full bird from being centered in the frame.

Technique

The farther away you can get the subject into your viewfinder, the better. If you try to focus only on a bird that's close to your position, you'll never get a good flight shot. As you see a bird coming in your direction, get it in the viewfinder, and track with it as it moves closer. Once it's in the position you like (the preferred frame size and in good light), you can fire away.

When you're panning a bird in flight, continue the panning motion even after you've taken the final shot. Following through will keep that last shot in focus better than if you abruptly stopped the movement. It's the same idea as a golfer doing a follow-through on her shot or a baseball player continuing with his swing. A good way to do this is to continue shooting after the bird has passed you by. The last couple shots will be throwaways, but you'll have included the shot you really want.

The eyes have it. As with any wildlife photo, you need to have the eye in sharp focus. If the eye is out-of-focus, then the shot is not of a technical quality suitable for publication. If possible, try to set your AF point on the eye. If you can't do this, at least get the focus on the neck, as the neck of a bird is on the same plane as the eye.

Location

The biggest factor to keep in mind when you're shooting flight photography is the relationship of the wind and the sun. Birds will always (well, almost always) take off and land into whatever wind or breeze there is. Getting the wind under their wings help them with lift and drag. Putting yourself in the right position to get the best flight shots means having both the wind and the sun at your back, allowing the birds to come towards you.

As you see, there are plenty of factors to keep in mind when you're taking flight shots of birds. You have to think about how much you want the bird to fill the frame, what the background is like, and the direction of the subject in relation to the sun. Since these variables change from picture to picture, you begin to understand that creating great flight shots requires more than just getting the subject sharp. You'll need to give yourself time and practice. In the meantime, you always have the delete button on both the camera and the computer.

My 600 f/4 sitting on a Wimberley head with my camera set to high-speed continuous and the sun and wind at my back will keep me happy for a good long time. I try to get caught up with what's in front of me, fly with it, and become part of the action. The next stop for me will be in front of my computer, looking at lots of shots of birds in flight and, hopefully, lots of keepers.

Just starting out in digital photography? It is not that difficult to take beautiful shots with your camera if you do it the right way. Here are some beginner tips you can follow:

Be Close

Try to get close to your subject. Close up shots adds more expression and details to your photo.

Right background

Try to go for simple backgrounds. They are often the best. If you can't get a good background, try to adjust your DOF (Depth of Field). This will focus on your subject and blur far objects.

Orientation

Your photo is a rectangular image. Hence you can choose between two orientation - vertical or horizontal. Horizontal orientation is usually not suitable for tall objects. It is best if you take the photos in both ways and determine which one is better.

Positioning

Use the rule of thirds to make your photos more interesting. Position your subject at the intersections of the imaginary lines will break up the symmetry. Your photo will be more artistic.

Unique angle

Your shots don't always have to be at eye-level. Be more creative. You can try shooting your subjects from the ground or above you. Don't be afraid to experiment.

Framing

You can use your surroundings to frame your subjects. In fact, you can use almost anything. Trees, doorways, windows etc are good natural frames.

Differentiate dimension & distance

A photo of a distant subject can seem static and one-dimensional. Including subjects nearer to you in your photos gives a sense of distance.

If you are still a beginner, the above methods are great ways to improve your digital photography skills. Don't forget to practice and take more shots as often as you can. Photography is something you need to have hands-on!

Believe it or not, I did NOT find these images on Go Fug Yourself. Actually, come to think of it, I haven't seen Britney on Go Fug Yourself in a while. Maybe there is a limit on how many times you can trash this girl. I mean, a bad outfit once in a while, but on a DAILY BASIS....even the geniuses at GFY must find it exhausting. How many times can you be shocked and grossed out by what this chick decides is "fashion"?

I know people, myself included, quite often refer to Britney Wear as stripper or hooker wear. Judging by the first picture, Britney is indeed plying her trade, so turns out we weren't far off.

Someone should tell her that she should only do it at night, though. Sure the cops are LOOKING for hookers at night, but at least that way she'd have a better chance at going undetected, you know?

A different kind of music post today. What I want you to do is click on the link below, and listen to this band. It's a live recording from a bar in Kingston, Ontario (Ontario is the province in which I live, for all you non-Canadians) and IT. IS. SWEET. The music, not Ontario. Although Ontario isn't half bad either.

I've heard of this band before but had never heard their music until very recently. And I am already totally addicted. The description of their music that I like the best is 'robo-electro-rock'.

They're from Edmonton, Alberta (Alberta is another Canadian province, far far FAR west of Ontario, for all you non-Canadians. It's a big big BIG country, yo.) Anyway the music is GREAT, but what really strikes me about them is that you can tell that they would be FUCKING AWESOME live. Apparently they like to incorporate a lot of jumping and dancing in their performance, and are particularly fond of scissor kicks.

I can get behind that.

Don Ho, known for 'Tiny Bubbles,' dies at 76

HONOLULU -- Legendary crooner Don Ho, who entertained tourists for decades wearing raspberry-tinted sunglasses and singing the catchy signature tune 'Tiny Bubbles,' has died. He was 76.

He died Saturday morning of heart failure, publicist Donna Jung said.

Ho had suffered with heart problems for the past several years, and had a pacemaker installed last fall. In 2005, he underwent an experimental stem cell procedure on his ailing heart in Thailand.

Promoter Tom Moffatt said he attended Ho's final show Thursday and Ho received a standing ovation. Afterward, Ho reminisced about his many years in Waikiki and talked about how Judy Garland sang with him one night.

'Don was in great spirits,' he said. 'He was fine.'

Ho entertained Hollywood's biggest stars and thousands of tourists for four decades. For many, no trip to Hawaii was complete without seeing his Waikiki show -- a mix of songs, jokes, double entendres, Hawaii history and audience participation.

Shows usually started and ended with the same song, 'Tiny Bubbles.' Ho mostly hummed the song's swaying melody as the audience enthusiastically took over the familiar lyrics: 'Tiny bubbles/in the wine/make me happy/make me feel fine.'

'I hate that song,' he often joked to the crowd. He said he performed it twice because 'people my age can't remember if we did it or not.'

The son of bar owners, Ho broke into the Waikiki entertainment scene in the early 1960s and, except for short periods, never left. Few artists are more associated with one place.

'Hawaii is my partner,' Ho told The Associated Press in 2004.

YES, WE HAVE A TIE. Christina Ricci and Paz Vega TIED! Which means, as you know, that they are going for ANOTHER ROUND. It ALSO means that Paz Vega is still not guaranteed a spot in the Championship Round in July.

Crazy.

Viggo Mortensen defeated Nathan Fillion, which means that both he and Nathan are now done. It also means that Viggo is retired UNDEFEATED, and even though he already confirmed his spot in the Championship Round after winning 3 rounds, it is worth pointing out again - he'll be back in July!

Neither of the Dead Candy Rounds were all that exciting - meaning that neither round was close. Yvonne de Carlo and Robert Mitchum defeated their competitors by pretty significant margins.

SO - next round we will have the same two chicks in Chick Candy, and we will have two NEW men in Eye Candy.

June Callwood dies at age 82

June Callwood loved her little sports car -- even if it pained her arthritic hands to drive it.

'She was here for lunch last fall and she offered to drive me back to my office in her standard Miata,' Casey House chairman Jamie Watt remembered with a chuckle yesterday, only hours after the death of the revered Toronto author, journalist and social activist.

'She had the old wind-up windows and she couldn't do it any more. She said she would just have to get a new one with power windows.'

Callwood died early yesterday after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was 82.

She was a pioneer in the fight to improve the lives of people living with AIDS, founding Casey House hospice in 1988 and naming it after her son, who died in a 1982 motorcycle accident.

'She will always be with us,' Watt said. 'Her legacy is her values. If we always stay true to providing the most compassionate care, looking after the whole person, fighting people no one wants to look after and being courageous then we will always be something that she would be proud of.'

Her next nominee is someone I didn't THINK I'd heard of before she was nominated, but I had, I just didn't know her by name. Her name, by the way, is Paz Vega, and she was nominated by Jacquie. She's been in lots of stuff, but where I know her from is the movie Spanglish - never saw it, but did see plenty of commercials for it.

The only other thing I know about her is she's HOT....OOH LA LA, HOT HOT HOT.

I seriously don't know how I'll be voting this round - I'll probably have to hold off for a bit before I vote...

I'm Squishy And I Need To Move On It

I'm stealing a page out of Jamie's book and posting a video today. AND as Jamie likes to do, I'm posting Mystery Science Theatre - but instead of a movie I'm posting a short - MY FAVOURITE short - Young Man's Fancy. I rarely post anything MST3K - even though this blog is NAMED after MST3K, and even though the header picture is from MST3K and even though MY WHOLE LIFE REVOLVES AROUND MST3K - because I'm always afraid of rambling on and on and on....Also I always fear I can never adequately convey my love of all thing MST3K. BUT I'm taking a deep breath, transgressing the fear, and posting......THIS. Best short EVER.

SO - Cate did it, she retires undefeated! Which is cool - but I admit, I do kinda wish Evangeline had a chance at another round. HOWEVER - I am still thrilled Cate is undefeated. You see how I keep going back & forth here? That's why I actually never ended up voting. I just couldn't make up my mind! Oh, that and I am, as you know, a tad verbose...

SO neither Cate nor Evangeline will be in the next round, which means we will have two new nominees coming up! It's been a while since that happened, eh? Kinda cool - everyone likes new meat.....

Taye and Jake - WOOWEE. Remember at the beginning of the round I said Taye was running away with it? And THEN it was super close? It was actually tied for a while near the end there, but Taye pulled through! Which is cool - I voted for him, I just think he is hot, plain & simple - but I am kind of surprised Jakey Poo won't be in the Championship Round. People get so 1950s squealing teenage girl about him!

As for the dead folk, the ladies was never in doubt. Dorothy Dandridge CRUSHED her competition. And even though her competition was my nominee, I think the result was appropriate - I mean, LOOK at her!

The men was a different story. Michael Hutchence was actually in the lead until late last night, when a couple of votes came in for Gary Cooper. This one really did come down to the wire (if, you know, there was a wire around here...)

Swedish Music: And The Delusions of Jenner

There are few things I love more than being proven to be the genius that (only) I think I am. Consider this article from The Local, about Swedish music. If you've read this blog with any regularity, YOU KNOW that I am ALWAYS going on and on and on about how great Swedish music is, and how much great stuff is coming out of that country. I'd go back through the archives and find all the posts in which I've stated this, to PROVE my geniosity (I'm totally making up words, but I CAN, you know?) but I am very lazy, so I cannot be bothered (us geniuses have MUCH more important things to worry about, oui?) SO I have put together a collection of songs that I love, as well as a couple that are mentioned in this article. I am not including MY FAVOURITE SWEDISH BAND The Knife, because even if you DON'T read this blog regularly, I AM SURE you are already WELL AWARE of my obsession with The Knife, so I don't feel any need to include them in this particular post (read: I'll spare you - THIS ONE TIME.) There are many bands I could include here, but I'm only including these few. The article does mention many others, so if you want to discover them on your own, here's a good place to start.

Melodic Swedes heading for world domination

It is summer in Ireland and an incredible song comes on the car radio. An infectious whistled melody and some rattling maracas casually meander into the vocals as the car winds its way along a mountain road. Two voices begin to sing about the early, tentative stages of a relationship.

There is something very familiar and vaguely Nordic about the whole thing. When the song fades out the DJ confirms my mounting suspicions: 'That was the fabulous Peter Bjorn and John with 'Young Folks', currently the most requested song on Irish radio.'

Currently the most requested song on Irish radio! The rental car almost winds up floating in a picturesque lake. Peter Bjorn and John are regulars on the Stockholm live circuit. I have seen them perform several times but had no idea that their music led a duplicitous life of its own beyond the shores of this oblong land.

Mind you, it is not the first time Swedish musicians have sprung such a surprise. Last year Gothenburg guitar man Jose Gonzales was all the rage from Galway to Gloucester with his cover of The Knife's Heartbeats. At that stage few people outside of Sweden had any idea that the song that launched a million colourful rubber balls in a Sony commercial was in fact a cover version.

Poor Pluto!

A few days ago, some big important men from some big important organization decided to strip Pluto of its planetary status. Now apparently many museums are struggling with how to cope with this, as are many educational facilities. WELL, this little article may have a solution for the students:

That and variations on it are the way millions of people learned to remember the names of the planets in the solar system - Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. The problem is that an international convention of astronomers decreed Thursday that tiny Pluto no longer meets the definition of a planet.

What a way to spoil a good mnemonic. Now how will students learn the planets?

I dunno, I just feel bad for poor Pluto. Maybe because I am a freak and I tend to get emotional even over inanimate objects (remember that IKEA commercial with the lamp? That snarky narrator was talking to ME, I just know it.) Also I can't figure out WHY it was so necessary to eliminate Pluto as a planet. It's all the way at the end there, it's not hurtin' anyone........just because it no longer fits in with what defines a planet, well, who came up with these definitions anyway!?!?!?! Don't worry Pluto, I bet you'll find WAY cooler orbs to hang out with, you don't need the other hoity toity planets, pfft..........

Becks Out

Personally I'm very disappointed, and confused - but I DO know that many English fans have a love-hate relationship with Becks. Some call him overrated, some say he chokes during the big matches, still others are not yet able to forgive him for missing a penalty shot in Euro 2004. But he's also one of the most loved players, too. Strange, strange situation. Being from Toronto, and being a fan of the Maple Leafs, I am WELL AWARE of the pressures athletes face from the media - ESPECIALLY in Toronto where the media is MERCILESS. In a way, this may be the best thing for Becks. In another way, if I were him I'd be PISSED. Apparently he handled it quite well, but I bet inside he was all 'WTF?!?!?' and pissed right off. Pfft, I'd be SO bitter, but I'm just like that.

I honestly believe far too much of the blame for England's lack of success in the big tournies is directed at Becks. His play at the World Cup earlier this summer was less than stellar, to say the least, but with very few exceptions the ENTIRE TEAM sucked ass, not just Becks. Whether he receives the majority of the blame because he (was) the captain, or because of his high profile off the pitch, well, I don't know. What I DO know is that while some of the criticism is warranted, most of it isn't. Anyway, I could go on & on about this, but why don't you read this article from BBC Sports instead - it's probably a tad more coherent, and less biased than anything I could write..........

Cup of Eye Candy Round 2 cont'd - Fabio vs Patrick

Tomorrow is the last day for voting for this, the second round of Cup of Eye Candy. And I'll tell ya, the votes are MUCH closer than they were this time last week for Fabio and Damon. Now, there is of course the possibility - nay, the certainty - that Mrs. Fabio Cannavaro (aka Daya) will go on another sexually explicit and violent campaign in order to garner votes for Fabio, but in all honestly I don't even know if that's necessary this time - it is VERY close (but I won't tell you who is in the lead hehe.) AND if you're wondering why there is only one picture of Fabio compared to two of Patrick, it's because halfway (well, 3/4 way technically) into uploading the pictures to post, blogger crapped out on me. AS USUAL. SO I will post the second Fabio picture as soon as I can. OK DAYA????? :P

ARGH! Blogger is being a total bitch - AGAIN - and won't let me post pictures!!!! Don't they REALIZE that the fates of Damon Albarn and Fabio Cannavaro DEPEND ON THIS?!?!?!??!?!

The Mystery of Orlando Bloom

So I was reading dlisted.com and was 'reading' (ie scanning quickly because I couldn't care less about this event) an article about the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel world premiere in California and I of course was exposed to pictures of Orlando Bloom. And I couldn't help but wonder the same thing I wonder EVERY time I see pictures of this dude: why is he considered hot? Am I alone here? I don't think he's ugly or anything, but I honestly see nothing special about this dude. To me he seems skinny and effeminate and pointy and........I don't know, he just has ZERO appeal to me. Even the pictures of Johnny Depp, who looks like a hobo here, have WAY more appeal to me than Orlando Bloom. Of course, that's not really a fair comparison, because Johnny Depp is one of the hottest men on the planet, and the crush I've had on him for most of my life shows no sign of abatting, even with the scruffy hat and purple sunglasses.

I ALSO don't see the appeal with Keira Knightly, but that's a story for another day.

Anyway, please let me know if I'm alone here, because I'm constantly surrounded by women who think he (Bloom) is just the absolute hotness. I don't CARE if I'm alone, y'all can have him, but I'm curious, you know?

I love this band - I Am The World Trade Center (named well before 9/11 - even so there apparently has been controversy over the name.) ANYWAY not my place to debate that, especially since I can't be bothered getting into it. One reason I love this band is because singer Amy Dyke was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2004, and while I obviously do not know the band personally, from what I've been able to read, Dyke is doing very well - see this article for a great interview with the other member of the band, Dan Geller - near the end he mentions that Dyke's recovery is going well.
